The RED Helium 8K sensor paired with the Entaniya HAL 4.3mm fisheye is one of the standard combinations for single-camera fulldome acquisition, because the lens is purpose-built for it: the 250° fisheye projects a φ17mm image circle that maps to roughly 250° horizontal by 220° vertical field of view on the Helium sensor — enough to cover a full dome in one shot rather than stitching multiple cameras together.
The Helium’s 8K resolution (8192×4320) matters directly here, since a fisheye image only uses the central circular portion of the frame; without a high native resolution, the effective pixel density projected onto a dome would drop sharply once cropped to the circular image.
Shooting fulldome with a single fisheye lens and sensor, rather than a multi-camera rig, also eliminates the stitching artifacts, parallax errors, and exposure-matching work that multi-camera dome capture requires — a meaningful advantage for both topside and underwater shoots where rig complexity is a real cost.
Underwater, this combination is particularly valuable because a single lens/port system is far easier to house, seal, and balance than a multi-camera array, while still delivering the extreme field of view fulldome needs to feel truly immersive. The Helium’s dynamic range and low-noise performance further help hold detail across the fisheye’s huge field of view, where a single frame often spans bright sky or surface light and deep shadow simultaneously.
