3d Mirror Rig – Custom Design And Battle Tested !

Available for RED DSMC 2 and DSMC3

Our company offers a high-performance stereoscopic filming system built around a mirror rig, the industry standard for precision 3D acquisition. The rig is composed of two RED DSMC2 Helium cameras, each equipped with an 8K Super 35 sensor, delivering matched resolution and color science across both eyes of the stereo pair. The two cameras are positioned at a 90° angle to one another — one horizontal, one vertical — around a semi-transparent mirror set at 45°. This beamsplitter divides incoming light: part is transmitted straight through to the horizontal camera, while the rest is reflected upward to the vertical camera.

Unlike side-by-side rigs, where the physical width of the camera bodies limits how close together the lenses can sit, a mirror rig lets both cameras share effectively the same optical axis. This allows the interaxial distance — the separation that drives the sense of depth — to be reduced to near zero, or adjusted with far greater precision than a side-by-side setup allows. That capability is what makes mirror rigs the preferred solution for macro photography, tight interiors, and close-up subjects, where even a few millimeters of misplaced separation can produce an uncomfortable or unnatural 3D effect.

Because both cameras view the scene through the same beamsplitter geometry, alignment between the two images is more stable and predictable, reducing the vertical disparities and convergence errors that require correction in post-production.

The result is a stereoscopic image with natural, precisely controlled depth — well suited to the giant-screen and immersive formats where 3D artifacts are magnified and viewer comfort depends on accuracy at the point of capture, not just in post.
